Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-41 Brown Cow – brush-on glaze for fine detail
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-41 Brown Cow is a ceramic glaze in the colour Brown Cow, applied with a brush to damp clay, bisque-fired earthenware or bisque-fired stoneware. According to Mayco, the series is highly pigmented and thick. The glaze stays where you put it, so it suits clean lines, small details and multi-coloured designs.
The glaze fires glossy and needs no additional clear glaze. It comes in a 236 ml container.
Application and coverage
The number of coats controls the result: one coat looks translucent, while two to three coats give full coverage according to Mayco. The colours in the series can be mixed with each other. Thinned with water, they give soft gradients and watercolour-style washes.
- Stir the glaze well before use
- Apply evenly with a brush and let each coat dry until touch-dry
- For full coverage, apply 2–3 coats
- Leave the foot ring of the piece free of glaze, otherwise it will stick to the kiln shelf
Firing and high firing
The glaze is formulated for cone 06/05, i.e. approx. 998 °C or approx. 1031 °C (guide value per Orton chart). It can be fired up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation and reduction. At high temperatures, colour or transparency may change; Mayco has documented this for some colours in the series. How SC-41 behaves at cone 6 has not been individually documented. Fire a test piece made from your own clay in your own kiln first.
Dinnerware
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) denotes a product with no hazard labelling.
