Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-46 Rawhide – ceramic glaze for details and multicoloured designs
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-46 Rawhide is a glossy ceramic glaze for painting on wet clay, bisque and stoneware bisque. The colour belongs to the Stroke & Coat series and comes in a 236 ml (8 fl oz) container. It fires glossy and needs no additional clear glaze.
The series is designed for firing from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising or reducing. You can therefore use Rawhide in an earthenware firing as well as a stoneware firing, but you should test the result first.
Application and coverage
One coat of Rawhide gives a translucent result, and each further coat increases the opacity. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The colours in the series can be mixed with each other, so you can create your own shades. The glaze can also be thinned if you want softer gradients or transparent effects.
Firing: what to look out for
At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising firing, Rawhide is semi-transparent according to Mayco and lightens slightly. In mid-range or high firing, designs may run. Mayco therefore advises testing with your own clay and kiln.
- Maturing firing: cone 06/05
- Firing range: cone 06 to 10
- Oxidising and reducing firing possible
- Fire a test piece beforehand, especially for mid-range and high firing
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, after firing the glaze is dinnerware safe when used as directed by the manufacturer. The ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal means that the glaze is classified as non-hazardous (no labelling required). The ceramic manufacturer is responsible for food-contact testing of the finished ware.
