Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-090 Elephant Ears – brush-on glaze for clay and bisqueware
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-090 Elephant Ears (Mayco code SC-90) is a highly pigmented, thick ceramic glaze for brush strokes and opaque coverage on damp clay and bisqueware. The glaze fires glossy and needs no clear glaze to do so. According to Mayco, it is dinnerware safe.
The colours in the series can be placed side by side without running. This gives you clean lines, fine details and multicoloured designs. The colours can be mixed with one another.
Applying Stroke & Coat
Stir the glaze well before applying. One coat gives a translucent result; Mayco recommends 2–3 coats for full coverage. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Thinned with water, it produces a wash or watercolour effect. Because the colours do not run, you can also work light next to or over dark, for example in the majolica technique.
- 1 coat: translucent
- 2–3 coats: opaque
- Thinned with water: wash effect
Firing and high firing
Stroke & Coat is designed to mature at cone 06/05: cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) or cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). With high firing in the stoneware range, for example cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colours may change: dark shades such as red, orange, yellow, blue and green can become darker, while light ones such as beige, violet and pink fade. Mayco therefore recommends a test. Before firing, make a test piece with the number of coats you will use later.
