Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-027 Sour Apple – glaze for details and opaque coverage

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-027 Sour Apple is a ceramic brush-on glaze for greenware, bisque and stoneware. It fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze. The number of coats controls the result: one coat is translucent, while 2–3 coats give opaque coverage.

According to Mayco, the firing range of the series runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising or reducing. The glazes are designed for cone 06/05 (cone 05: approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The colours in the series can be mixed with one another and thinned with water or medium. This gives you wash and watercolour effects.

Applying Stroke & Coat

Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a soft brush. Let each coat dry before applying the next. This keeps lines clean and the colour even. According to Mayco, one coat stays translucent; for full coverage you need 2–3 coats. Thinned with water or medium, it gives softer gradients. You can mix SC-027 with other Stroke & Coat colours.

Firing and high firing

The glaze is designed for cone 06/05 and works best there. If you fire at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), do a test on a test tile first. Mayco points out that the colours in the series behave differently in this range, and some become transparent and lighter.

Use on tableware

According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe when fired correctly. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal means that no hazard labelling is required, and according to the data sheet it applies only to the USA. For tableware, use only glazes approved for that purpose and make sure they are not mixed with others.
