Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-209 Speckled Jaded – speckled glaze for ceramics

Mayco Stroke & Coat Wonderglaze SP-209 Speckled Jaded is a speckled effect glaze for ceramics. It combines the properties of the classic Stroke & Coat colours with fine flecks of colour. The surface fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze. One coat looks translucent; with 2–3 coats the glaze becomes opaque.

Neighbouring Stroke & Coat colours do not run into each other during firing. You can place them right next to each other, even light on dark, for example in majolica techniques. The glaze can be mixed with other Stroke & Coat colours and thinned with water or medium if you want transparent or watercolour-like effects. As the liquid colour is quite close to the fired result, you can plan your design and the final result well.

How to apply the glaze

You can apply SP-209 Speckled Jaded to damp clay or to bisque-fired earthenware or stoneware.

  • Stir the glaze well before applying.
  • Apply 2–3 coats with a brush; a single coat stays translucent.
  • Let each coat dry completely before applying the next.
  • For transparent effects, thin with water or medium.

Firing and result

Mayco formulated the Speckled series for cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat in general can be used up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in both oxidation and reduction firing. At high temperatures the speckles may run. The colour samples were fired flat on white clay at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation and at cone 10 in reduction. Clay type, coat thickness, firing schedule and temperature affect the result; a test tile on your own clay shows you beforehand how the glaze will look.

Dinnerware and safety

According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI: non-hazardous (no labelling required). Use the glaze in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
