Mayco Jungle Gems S-2714 Herb Garden – crystal glaze in sage, brown and green

Mayco Jungle Gems S-2714 Herb Garden is a crystal effect glaze for decorative ceramics such as vases, bowls or figures. The base is translucent and glassy, with crystals in sage, brown and green shades. During firing, yellow and blue-green speckles appear. The result is a surface with a plant-like texture. It is a reactive effect glaze, so every piece looks slightly different.

The glaze is intended for decorative purposes only, not for tableware. The play of colour shows to particularly good effect on light clay or simple shapes. The 118 ml jar suits smaller projects or first trials.

Applying and firing the glaze

The crystals settle in the jar. Shake the glaze well before each use and stir it so that the crystals are evenly distributed.

• Apply to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing cone 04, approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Apply 2–3 even coats with a fan brush and let each coat dry before the next
• For the third coat, redistribute the crystals if necessary so that the coverage is even
• Let dry thoroughly and fire at cone 06 to 05 (approx. 998 °C to approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)

Tips to prevent running

During firing the crystals melt and flow a little. Do not place any crystals near the base, otherwise they may run down to the foot of the piece and stick it to the kiln shelf. A test piece on your own clay shows you beforehand how the colours will look.
