Mayco Jungle Gems S-2711 Tahiti Grape – blue crystal glaze with speckles
Mayco Jungle Gems S-2711 Tahiti Grape is an effect glaze for decorative ceramics, applied to bisque-fired clay. The base is a semi-opaque blue. Grey and white crystals sit within it, melting during firing and opening into flower-like patterns. Black speckles add further depth to the surface.
Fire at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation. Because the crystals react and flow in the kiln, every piece turns out slightly different. The effect shows most clearly on light, smooth surfaces. At 118 ml, the glaze suits smaller pieces such as bowls, figures or vases, and test tiles.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before each use and shake it so that the crystals are distributed throughout the jar. Then apply it with a fan brush.
- Apply 2–3 even coats to bisque-fired ceramics
- Allow to dry well between coats
- For the third coat, redistribute the crystals if needed so that they are evenly spread
- Do not place crystals near the base, as they can flow and run during firing
- After application, allow to dry thoroughly, then fire at cone 06 to 05
Things to bear in mind
Tahiti Grape is intended for decorative pieces only. The surface may crackle and is therefore not suitable for contact with food. The glaze carries the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal; according to ACMI, it is exempt from hazard labelling. Use it in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The safety data sheets (SDS) are available at MaycoColors.com. A test piece shows you in advance how the crystals develop on your clay and in your kiln.
