Mayco Designer Liner SG-403 Red – fine lines and lettering on ceramics

Mayco Designer Liner SG-403 in red is a clay-based, highly pigmented decorating liner in a 37 ml bottle. The metal writing tip lets you draw fine or bold lines, lettering and small illustrations straight onto ceramics, with no extra brush.

The liner is ready to use and can be applied to greenware, bisque-fired ware and over other glazes. It works best when fired under a non-running clear or semi-transparent glaze. Without a glaze over it, it fires matt.

Working with the liner

Place the tip down with even pressure and draw the line in one go for a smooth, even result. Practise lettering and patterns first on a tile or test piece. After firing, the liner stays flat on the surface (not dimensional). If applied too thickly, it may crack and possibly flake off, according to Mayco. It is better to apply a thin line and, if needed, a second one after drying. Close the bottle after use and keep the tip clean so the colour does not dry there and block the opening.

Firing and glaze

For this range, Mayco gives a firing range of cone 06 to cone 6. Mayco shows the colour result at cone 06; at cone 6 the colour does not change. Plan the firing to suit your clay and your glaze. Non-running clear or semi-transparent glazes are suitable as a cover. A strongly running glaze can blur the fine lines.
