Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-36 Irish Luck – glossy brush-on ceramic glaze for strokes and opaque coverage
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-36 Irish Luck is a highly pigmented, thick ceramic glaze for brush strokes and opaque areas. You apply it to wet clay, earthenware bisque or stoneware bisque. It fires glossy and needs no clear glaze. The jar contains 236 ml.
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal means: no hazard labelling. Stroke & Coat colours can be mixed with each other, and thinned with water they give soft, watercolour-style washes.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use. One coat looks translucent, and opacity increases with each further coat. For full coverage, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next, so brush strokes and edges stay clean. For washes, thin the glaze with water and apply it thinly.
- 1 coat: translucent, brush strokes remain visible
- 2–3 coats: opaque
- Thinned: soft watercolour-style wash
Firing and cone
Mayco formulates Stroke & Coat for cone 06/05. Cone 06 corresponds to approx. 998 °C, cone 05 to approx. 1031 °C (guide values per Orton chart). According to Mayco, the glaze can be fired from cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction. For cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation, Mayco states that SC-36 gives opaque coverage with no colour change. With other colours in the range, the colour may change at high-fire temperatures. For higher temperatures and your own kiln, a test piece on your clay is worthwhile. Leave the foot of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
