Stoneware clay 468 – hand-building clay with 40 % grog, fires white to light cream
Goerg & Schneider stoneware clay 468 is a plastic pottery clay for hand building medium-sized ceramic pieces. It fires white to light cream and contains 40 % grog with a fine particle size of 0–0.5 mm. The grog stabilises the clay during modelling, and the fine particle size gives a fairly even surface. According to the manufacturer, despite the high grog content, the structure of the clays gives it high dry strength. This helps you through the delicate drying phase, when most cracks occur.
You get 10 kg in one pack, individually packed. The light firing colour is a neutral base for glazes, engobes and other ceramic decorating techniques.
Building and drying
The clay is intended for hand building medium-sized pieces, for example using coil or slab techniques for vessels, sculptures or decorative objects. Let medium-sized and thick-walled work dry slowly and evenly. Cover delicate areas loosely at first so that different wall thicknesses do not dry unevenly. According to the manufacturer, drying shrinkage is 5 %. So make your pieces correspondingly larger from the start.
Firing and glaze
The recommended firing range is 1000–1260 °C. This means you can choose the firing temperature and glaze flexibly. The colour of the clay changes with temperature: it is white at 1070 °C, light cream at 1140 °C and cream at 1240 °C. This also affects how transparent glazes look on it. Before using a new glaze on a larger piece, it is worth doing a test firing with a small test piece made from the same clay.
