Mayco SW-166 Norse Blue – glossy blue stoneware glaze

Mayco Stoneware SW-166 Norse Blue is a stoneware glaze for mid-fire and stoneware firing. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Mayco describes it as a semi-opaque, glossy blue glaze with light blue and green tones. The colour is therefore not an even, flat blue but relies on subtle variations.

The result depends heavily on application: the thicker you apply it, the more even the colour becomes. Where the glaze sits thinly, it breaks translucent, and on textures and reliefs it pools darker. This emphasises edges, grooves and structure, for example on bowls, vases or relief work. At cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in a reducing firing, the colour becomes darker.

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well and brush it onto bisque-fired ceramic. Mayco specifies one to three coats; let each coat dry before applying the next. The glaze must not be sprayed. For a deep, even blue, apply three coats. With a thinner application, the light, translucent transitions remain visible. A test piece on your own clay will show you the effect beforehand.

Firing and use

Mayco describes the results at cone 6 oxidising and cone 10 reducing. The nuances that develop in the firing depend on coat thickness, clay and kiln firing schedule. When glazing, leave the foot of the piece free of glaze or protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash.

Dinnerware

According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe (Dinnerware Safe). This applies when used as directed by the manufacturer and properly fired.
