Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-275 Speckled Orange-A-Peel – effect glaze with white and brown speckles

Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-275 Speckled Orange-A-Peel is an effect glaze for earthenware and stoneware that fires with white and brown speckles. You brush it onto bisque-fired ware. It fires glossy and needs no additional clear glaze. Its slightly thick consistency allows precise brush strokes and an even application. One coat looks translucent; according to Mayco, 2–3 coats give full opacity. Let each coat dry before applying the next.

Firing and colour effect

Mayco formulates the Speckled colours for cone 06/05, that is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). For Stroke & Coat as a whole, Mayco gives cone 06–10, in oxidation or reduction. Cone 10 corresponds to approx. 1285 °C (guide value per Orton chart). At low-fire temperatures the colour stays strong and the speckles are clearly visible. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidation firing, SP-275 becomes semi-transparent, the colour lightens slightly and the speckles run softly. If you want clearly defined speckles, fire within the recommended range of cone 06/05.

Application and choosing a colour

Stir the glaze well before use and apply it evenly to bisque-fired ware. According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat can also be applied to damp clay. Wipe the foot clean before firing so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf. Orange-A-Peel is one of several Speckled colours in the series. They differ in base colour, speckle colour and behaviour at higher temperatures. A test piece fired at your own firing temperature will show you beforehand how much the speckles run. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) stands for a product exempt from hazard labelling.
