Mayco Underglaze UG-210 Forest Green – dark forest green underglaze
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-210 Forest Green is an underglaze in a dark forest green for decorating ceramics. It is formulated for greenware (wet or leather-hard clay) and bisque. You can use a brush for areas, details and shading. According to Mayco, the firing range is cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 998–1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The container holds 59 ml.
The true colour only shows after firing. Without clear glaze, the underglaze fires to a satin matt finish; with clear glaze the surface becomes glossy and the colour more intense. If you want a strong, deep green, apply a transparent clear glaze over it.
Applying the underglaze
Forest Green can be applied directly to wet or leather-hard clay, and equally to bisque. For an even colour, shake the container well before use.
- Apply 2–3 coats, for patterns or opaque areas
- Let each coat dry slightly before applying the next
- Applied directly to wet or leather-hard clay: fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- A brush suits details and areas; in thinner coats the green becomes more transparent
Firing and clear glaze
If you want a glossy surface or are decorating dinnerware, a second firing with clear glaze follows. For earthenware clear glazes, according to Mayco this is cone 06–05 (approx. 998–1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart); for stoneware clear glazes it is cone 5–10, following the instructions for the glaze in question. For Forest Green, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-004 Zinc Free Clear. The maturing point of the underglaze is cone 06/05. Colours may change at higher temperatures, so a test on your own clay and in your own kiln will show you the result beforehand.
Decorating dinnerware
The underglaze on its own is not intended for dinnerware. Forest Green is dinnerware safe only if you apply a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze over it and fire both correctly.
