Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-046 Bright Yellow – yellow underglaze for ceramics
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-046 Bright Yellow is an underglaze in a clear, intense yellow for decorating ceramics. You apply it to leather-hard clay, bisque or greenware, then paint, dab or layer it before firing. The yellow suits sunny motifs, accents, patterns and contrasts. It belongs to the Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze series, which comes in many other shades.
Without a clear glaze, the colours in the series fire matt. If you want more colour intensity or are decorating dinnerware, you need a transparent clear glaze over the top. For tableware and drinking vessels, according to Mayco the underglaze is only suitable under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze).
Applying the underglaze
Shake the colour well before use. With a brush you can apply Bright Yellow thinly as a transparent wash for delicate yellows, or in several coats for strong areas; opaque coverage usually needs three coats, while fine designs need fewer. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The colours in the series can be mixed with one another, so you can, for example, lighten the yellow or shift it towards orange. Spraying is not intended.
Firing sequence and clear glaze
Mayco describes the process as follows: apply the colour to wet or leather-hard clay and fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). You can then apply a clear glaze and finish with the glaze firing.
- Earthenware: glaze firing cone 06 to 05 (approx. 998 to 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Stoneware: glaze firing up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- The series is designed for cone 06/05. Mayco recommends a test at the desired firing temperature before you decorate larger pieces.
Decorating dinnerware
For cups, plates or bowls, cover the underglaze completely with a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze. Only in this combination is it suitable for dinnerware according to Mayco. Without a clear glaze the surface stays matt and should not be regarded as dinnerware safe. The ACMI AP seal means, according to ACMI: exempt from hazard labelling.
