Mayco UG-146 Pink Pink – pink underglaze for decorating ceramics
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-146 Pink Pink is a pink underglaze for decoration, lettering, patterns and blocks of colour on ceramics. You apply it with a brush or sponge to wet clay, greenware or bisque-fired ware. The colour is a light, bright pink.
Fundamentals is Mayco's first product line and is designed for consistent colour, easy application and performance. The underglazes in the range come in many other colours; UG-146 is the number for this pink.
Applying Pink Pink
Apply the underglaze in 2–3 coats so that the colour shows its full intensity. Let each coat dry before you apply the next, otherwise the layer underneath will smudge. With a brush you can paint fine lines, lettering or floral and graphic motifs, and with a sponge you can cover larger areas. Single coats applied too thickly dry unevenly, so several thin layers are safer. On bisque-fired clay bodies (cone 04, approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart) you work in exactly the same way as on wet or raw clay.
Firing and finish
Mayco gives the firing range for Fundamentals as cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The product page shows cone 06 oxidation, as well as cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) oxidation and cone 10 reduction. At cone 6 and cone 10 the colour becomes more concentrated, so the pink can look different there than at cone 06. A test piece made from your own clay and fired in your own kiln will show you the result beforehand.
- Without clear glaze, the underglaze fires matt.
- Under a transparent clear glaze, it gives a glossy finish.
For tableware
As decoration on cups, plates or bowls, Pink Pink may only be used under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze. Only with this combination is the piece dinnerware safe according to Mayco. An unglazed surface with underglaze is not intended for this.
