Mayco Underglaze UG-203 Squash Yellow – warm yellow for ceramics under clear glaze

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-203 Squash Yellow is a warm yellow underglaze for decorating ceramics. You apply it with a brush to wet or leather-hard clay and then fire it. Depending on how you apply it, you can create delicate, transparent yellows or stronger areas of colour.

Squash Yellow is designed for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C and approx. 1031 °C respectively, guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, the colour holds up at cone 6 and cone 10 and becomes more concentrated in the firing. Without clear glaze, the underglaze fires matt. For stronger colour intensity, or for dinnerware, apply a clear glaze.

Application and firing

Shake the bottle well before use. For opaque areas, apply several coats and let each one dry to the touch; for delicate designs, fewer coats are enough. The sequence according to Mayco:

• Apply to wet or leather-hard clay
• Fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Optional: apply clear glaze and glaze fire at cone 06–05 (earthenware), or at cone 5 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) for stoneware
• Fire a test piece at your firing temperature before use

With and without clear glaze

Unglazed, Squash Yellow looks matt. With a clear glaze, the yellow becomes more intense and glossier. According to the manufacturer, Squash Yellow is only suitable for dinnerware under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). The ACMI AP seal (Approved Product) indicates a product with no hazard labelling according to ACMI. If you have questions about dinnerware, test the finished piece beforehand.
