Mayco Underglaze UG-010 Crimson – red underglaze for ceramics
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-010 Crimson is a red underglaze for decorating ceramics. You apply it with a brush or sponge to damp clay, greenware or bisque-fired ware. It belongs to Fundamentals, Mayco's first product line, designed for consistent colour, ease of use and performance. The 59 ml content is enough for patterns, details and areas on individual pieces.
Without a clear glaze, Fundamentals fires matt. With a transparent clear glaze over it, you get a glossy surface in which the Crimson red looks stronger.
Applying the underglaze
Stir the underglaze well before applying. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats with a brush or sponge. Let each coat dry before you apply the next, so that the colour underneath does not dissolve again. Use the brush for details and patterns and dab areas with the sponge. If you have already bisque-fired, a bisque firing at cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart) is suitable as a base.
Firing and colour effect
The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Mayco shows Crimson at cone 06 and cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation and at cone 10 in reduction. At cone 6 and cone 10 the colour becomes more concentrated. If you fire at a high temperature, therefore, plan to make a test piece first. For these temperatures Mayco names SW-001 Stoneware Clear as the clear glaze.
For dinnerware
If you want to decorate cups or plates, cover the underglaze completely with a transparent clear glaze that is suitable for dinnerware. Only in this combination is it intended for dinnerware.
