Mayco UG-021 Leaf Green – green underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-021 Leaf Green is a green underglaze for decorating ceramics, for example floral motifs, patterns and calm areas of colour. You apply it with a brush to wet clay, greenware or bisque-fired ware. The colours in the Fundamentals range can be mixed with one another.

How the green looks depends on the firing: at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the colour fires matt, even without clear glaze. A clear or matt clear glaze intensifies the shade. At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidising firing and cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in a reducing firing, it becomes a dark olive green according to Mayco, and the colour concentrates in places.

Application

Shake the jar well before use. Apply 2–3 coats with a brush and let each coat dry before applying the next. The colour is not intended for spraying. As the firing behaviour of clay and kilns varies, Mayco recommends testing with your own clay and in your own kiln before use.

Firing and clear glaze

On clay or greenware, first fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Then apply the clear glaze and fire for earthenware at cone 06/05 (approx. 998 and 1,031 °C respectively, guide value per Orton chart). For stoneware, firing at a higher temperature is intended, and the SW-004 Zinc Free Clear glaze is the right match. For dinnerware: Leaf Green is dinnerware safe only under a transparent clear glaze suitable for dinnerware. According to ACMI, the AP seal means that no hazard labelling is required.
