Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-198 Dark Grey – dark grey underglaze

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-198 Dark Grey is an underglaze in a neutral dark grey for painting and decorating ceramics. You apply it with a brush to wet or leather-hard clay and to bisque ware, for example for lines, contrasts, graphic patterns and solid areas. The more coats you apply, the more opaque the grey becomes; for delicate designs, fewer coats are enough.

Without a clear glaze, the underglaze fires matt. For greater colour intensity and for dinnerware, you need a transparent clear glaze. For Dark Grey, Mayco recommends SW-004 Zinc-Free Clear.

Working with the underglaze

Shake the bottle well before use. Apply the colour with a brush to wet or leather-hard clay; it also works on bisque ware. Let each coat dry slightly before applying the next. For strong, opaque areas, apply several coats; for lines and more transparent shades of grey, fewer coats are enough. Then, according to Mayco, fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). You can then apply a clear glaze and glaze fire.

Firing, colour and dinnerware

At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colour becomes more concentrated. At cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Dark Grey without glaze shifts to brown. Mayco advises doing a test at your own firing temperature before use. For dinnerware, the underglaze is only suitable under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze. Without a clear glaze, it is not dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP (Approved Product) seal indicates a product exempt from hazard labelling.
