Mayco Underglaze UG-218 Pear Green – light yellow-green for painting ceramics
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-218 Pear Green is an opaque underglaze in a light, fresh green with a yellowish tone. You can use it to paint ceramics, for example floral motifs, patterns and light areas of colour. The jar contains 59 ml.
The underglaze is formulated for greenware or bisque. The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). As with opaque Fundamentals colours, the true shade only shows after firing, so do not treat the look in the jar as the final result.
Applying the underglaze
Shake the jar well before use. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats, depending on whether you are drawing a design or painting an opaque area. You can apply it directly to wet or leather-hard clay and then fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Alternatively, paint onto an already bisque-fired clay body (bisque, cone 04 for Mayco). The colour can be painted, dabbed and layered, for brushwork, details and larger areas.
Firing, clear glaze and dinnerware
Without glaze, the underglaze fires to a satin matt finish; with clear glaze it gives a glossy look. For the second firing with clear glaze, Mayco gives cone 06 (approx. 998 °C) to cone 05 (approx. 1,031 °C) for earthenware and up to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C) for stoneware (in each case a guide value per Orton chart). At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Pear Green stays concentrated in colour according to Mayco, with SW-001 Stoneware Clear without any change. The glaze is formulated for low-fire use. At higher temperatures the shade may change, so do a test firing on your own clay in your own kiln.
Dinnerware only with clear glaze
For dinnerware, Pear Green is only suitable under a transparent clear glaze that is safe for dinnerware (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze this does not apply. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal indicates a product with no hazard labelling.
