Egg Tip Plaster Mould – Forming the Top of a Clay Egg
With the egg tip plaster mould, made of casting plaster, you form the tip of a larger egg from clay. It is designed as the counterpart to the 10 cm diameter hemisphere mould (HH205/10): you make the two halves separately and then join them to form an egg.
The casting plaster draws moisture out of the damp clay you press into it. This firms up the clay in the mould, so you can remove the egg tip quickly and easily. The mould is made in Germany.
How the two moulds make an egg
Form the egg tip and the hemisphere separately from clay. You join the halves while they are still damp, using slip.
- Press the clay into the plaster mould
- Wait until the plaster has drawn moisture out of the clay and the piece comes away from the mould
- Carefully remove the tip from the mould
- Score the joining edges, brush on slip and put the halves together
- Smooth the seam and let the egg dry slowly
Firing tip
A closed hollow piece needs a small air hole in an inconspicuous spot before firing. Otherwise trapped air or residual moisture can make the egg burst in the kiln. The clay should also be evenly dried all the way through before you fire it.
