Botz PRO 9314 Rauchquarz – glossy grey liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9314 Rauchquarz liquid glaze is a ready-to-use brush-on glaze in semi-transparent grey with a glossy finish, for earthenware and stoneware. Its firing range runs from 1020 to 1280 °C. You can therefore use it in an earthenware firing just as well as in a high firing, without having to plan around a single temperature.
The glaze is applied as a liquid straight from the container, with no mixing needed. It can be combined with Botz Unidekor. The PRO series is available in other colours and in 200 ml and 800 ml sizes; the 800 ml tub suits you if you are glazing larger quantities or several pieces.
Firing temperature and application
The effect of the glaze depends on the firing temperature. The following guide values apply to the Botz PRO series; a test piece made from your own clay will show you in advance how the grey turns out for you:
- Earthenware range from 1020 °C: the colour becomes strong and almost opaque. Apply the glaze 2 to 3 times.
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): the colour is retained and the surface becomes more semi-transparent. 2 coats are enough.
- High firing/stoneware up to 1280 °C: the surface becomes glassy and semi-transparent. 2 coats are recommended; the series also gives good results on porcelain at 1250 °C.
Preventing runs
Botz points out that the glaze tends to run when applied thickly, especially in the higher firing ranges. Apply several thin layers rather than one thick one and let each layer dry. Work particularly thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot free of glaze. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash in case some glaze does run off.
