Wire Loop Modelling Tools – 6 Tools for Hollowing Out and Shaping Clay

The set consists of 6 wooden modelling tools with a wire loop for working with clay, loam and modelling compounds. With the loops you hollow out forms, cut out recesses and add texture to surfaces. The set suits beginners as well as experienced potters and artists.

The tools are 20 cm long and made of sanded, polished birch wood. The smooth surface sits comfortably in the hand. At one end of each is a modelling loop made of sturdy round wire, set in a metal ferrule. This keeps the loop firmly fixed in the wood.

Working with the loops

A wire loop scrapes material away evenly without squashing the clay. This works best with leather-hard clay: it is firm enough to hold its shape and can still be cleanly removed. Hollow out a piece gradually and pull the loop towards you in short strokes. Check the wall thickness from time to time so that the wall does not become too thin. With very wet clay, the loop tends to smear the material rather than cut it.

Why a set of six

With six tools you have several to hand and do not need to keep cleaning them when switching between hollowing out, cutting and texturing. After use, wipe off any clay residue and let the tools dry so that the birch wood does not stay damp.
