Modelling Loop Tool No. 5 – Round Loop for Hollowing Out Clay

The No. 5 modelling loop tool is a pottery tool with a round loop of ground flat steel and a wooden handle. You use it to cut hollows out of clay, loam and other modelling materials and to shape surfaces. At 130 mm long, it sits comfortably in the hand and is easy to control even on small pieces.

The loop is 6 mm wide. The round shape suits rounded hollows, for example in bowls, figures or reliefs. The modelling loop tool belongs to a series numbered 1 to 5 in different shapes. No. 5 is the round loop.

Working with the loop tool

Leather-hard clay is best for hollowing out, as it holds its shape and cuts cleanly. Set the loop flat against the clay and draw it through in layers rather than cutting deep in one go. This keeps the wall thickness even, so the piece does not become too thin in one place. Hold the handle like a pen; the loop scrapes the clay away. Clean the tool after use and dry the steel so that it does not rust.
