Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-209 Jade – underglaze in a cool green

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-209 Jade is an underglaze for ceramics in a balanced green with a slightly cool tone. You paint, dab or layer it onto leather-hard clay or bisque-fired ware, for even areas, fine lines and understated decoration. Depending on the number of layers, the colour can be built up from transparent to opaque.

Without a clear glaze, the underglaze fires matt. For more intense colour, apply a clear glaze or matt clear glaze over the top. For Jade, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001.

Working with Jade

Shake the underglaze well before use. You can apply it directly to wet or leather-hard clay, then fire the piece to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and glaze it afterwards. For delicate Jade shades, apply a little colour; for rich areas, build up several thin layers and let each one dry. The colours in the series can be mixed with one another.

Firing and clear glaze

The Fundamentals Underglazes are designed for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C and approx. 1031 °C respectively, guide value per Orton chart). The glaze firing with clear glaze is carried out at cone 06–05 for earthenware and up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) for stoneware. Without clear glaze, Jade changes depending on the firing: at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the colour becomes more concentrated, while at cone 10 it shifts more strongly towards blue. It is therefore worth testing at your own firing temperature.

Dinnerware

Jade is only dinnerware safe under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze, this does not apply.
