Caran d'Ache FIXPENCIL Black Code – clutch pencil for 2 mm leads

The FIXPENCIL Black Code by Caran d'Ache is a clutch pencil (a mechanical pencil with a clamping mechanism) for 2 mm graphite leads. You write and sketch with a lead that you push out to the length you want. The hexagonal aluminium barrel sits securely in the hand and does not roll off the desk. The metal clip and push button have a matt black chrome finish.

The pencil is refillable and has a built-in sharpener. The lead reservoir is under the push button. A 2 mm diameter B graphite lead is included, so you can start writing straight away. The flexible clip holds the pencil on a notebook, shirt pocket or document folder. It comes in a black Slimpack tin with a magnetic silicone holder, which also makes it suitable as a gift.

Using the clutch pencil

Press the button and the lead slides forward. When you let go, it clamps firmly in place again. Do not let the lead protrude too far, as leads that protrude only a short way are less likely to break when writing and drawing. When the point becomes blunt, sharpen the lead with the built-in sharpener. To insert new leads, remove the push button and place the lead in the reservoir.

Who is the pencil suitable for?

The 2 mm lead is thicker than in fine-lead mechanical pencils. It is suitable for notes, sketches and drafts, where you vary between a fine and a broad line through the pressure you apply and the lead you choose. Which grade you buy as a refill depends on whether you prefer to work light and fine or soft and dark.
