Botz PRO 9305 Aquamarin – glossy light blue/turquoise liquid glaze for 1020–1280 °C
Botz PRO 9305 Aquamarin is a ready-to-use brush-on liquid glaze in glossy light blue/turquoise for earthenware and stoneware. The firing range of 1020–1280 °C is unusually wide: you can use the same glaze on earthenware, on early-vitrifying clays and in high firing. The tin contains 200 ml and Botz makes it in Germany.
The surface is glossy and semi-transparent. How the colour looks depends on the firing temperature and the number of coats. Aquamarin combines well with Botz Unidekor, for example for decoration under or over the glaze.
Colour at different firing temperatures
For the PRO colours, Botz describes three typical ranges. A test piece on your own clay shows you beforehand how Aquamarin turns out for you.
- From 1020 °C (earthenware): strong, almost opaque colour; apply 2–3 coats.
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): the colour stays, the surface becomes more semi-transparent; apply 2 coats.
- High firing around 1250 °C: glassy, semi-transparent surface in pastel shades, also on porcelain. Aquamarin melts out more transparently here.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a soft brush to bisque-fired ceramics. Let each coat dry slightly before applying the next. Leave the glaze to dry for a day before firing. The most common mistake is applying it too thickly: the glaze then tends to run and can pool at the foot of the piece. Leave the foot ring free, apply more thinly towards the bottom and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash.
Suitability for tableware
Botz recommends the PRO glazes for tableware from approx. 1200 °C. In the earthenware range (1020–1100 °C), many clays are not yet watertight. Ceramics like this should not be filled with liquids for long periods or left outside in frost. For tableware, Botz recommends washing by hand.
