Botz PRO 9309 Heliodor – green brush-on liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9309 Heliodor is a ready-to-use green brush-on liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware. The finish is glossy and semi-transparent. With its wide firing range of 1020–1280 °C, you can glaze pieces made from different clays with the same glaze. The tin contains 200 ml.
The colour effect depends on the firing temperature. In the PRO series, the colours are strong and almost opaque at the lower end of the range, and glassy and semi-transparent at high-fire temperatures. Botz also states that the glaze is suitable for RAKU and combines well with Botz Unidekor. It is best to make a test piece from your own clay so you can see how Heliodor looks on it.
Firing: how Heliodor looks
Botz's recommendations for the PRO series by temperature range: Botz gives the recommended firing temperature as 1050 °C for earthenware and 1250 °C for stoneware, each with a 10–20 minute hold time.
- From 1020 °C (earthenware): strong, almost opaque colour, apply 2–3 coats
- Around 1150 °C: the colour stays, the surface becomes more semi-transparent, apply 2 coats
- Around 1250 °C (high fire): glassy, semi-transparent surface in pastel shades, with good results on porcelain at 1250 °C as well
Application and avoiding runs
Stir the glaze well before brushing it on and leave it to dry for a day before firing. It tends to run if applied thickly. For this reason, apply it more thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot unglazed. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. Make sure the kiln room is well ventilated, so that the kiln fumes can escape directly outdoors.
Use on tableware
Botz recommends PRO glazes for tableware from approx. 1200 °C, provided the clay body is vitrified. In the earthenware range (1020–1100 °C), many clays are not yet watertight. You should not fill such ceramics with liquids for long periods or leave them outside in frost. Botz recommends hand washing. According to Botz, all Botz products are non-hazardous (no labelling required).
