Botz Stoneware Engobe 9806 Ocean – matt, opaque deep blue for stoneware

Botz stoneware engobe 9806 Ocean is a blue/deep blue engobe for colouring stoneware before firing. It is stable in the firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C, so it can be used in the usual stoneware firings. Without glaze, it dries and fires to a soft matt, earthy finish. It covers well and picks out outlines sharply.

Under a clear glaze (e.g. Botz 9300 or 9870), the blue becomes intense, vivid and glossy. Ocean is one of the Botz Edition colours and can be mixed with other colours in this series, so you can create your own shades of blue. The colour is also available in the 800 ml tin. The 200 ml tin is plenty for tests and smaller projects.

Applying the engobe

The engobe can be applied to leather-hard or already bisque-fired clay. An engobe is a coloured clay slip containing pigments, which bonds with the clay body during firing.

• Stir the tin well so the colour pigments are evenly distributed
• Apply 2–3 coats with a brush
• Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next
• Fire in the firing range of 1180–1280 °C

Matt or glossy?

Applied on its own, Ocean stays matt. If you would like a glossy surface, cover the engobe with a clear glaze. The blue then looks deeper and more vivid. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how colour and glaze work together in your firing. The tin is also a good choice if you want to mix individual colours from the series and test the mixture.
