Mayco Stoneware SW-101 Stoned Denim – blue stoneware glaze with brown break
Mayco Stoneware SW-101 Stoned Denim is an opaque stoneware glaze in a variable blue that breaks to brown in places. It comes in 473 ml (16 fl oz) for glazing ceramics in the stoneware range.
The colour depends on the firing: at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidation firing, it gives a variable blue with brown breaks. At cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in a reduction firing, the colour becomes darker. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) stands for a product with no hazard labelling. Stoned Denim belongs to the Mayco Stoneware series for the stoneware range.
Controlling the colour effect
The thickness of application influences the result: the thinner you apply Stoned Denim, the browner the glaze becomes. The thicker the application, the bluer the result. Where the glaze breaks, it turns brown. As the blue can differ from piece to piece, a test piece in your own clay will show you beforehand how the colour turns out for you.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a brush to the dust-free, bisque-fired piece. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Mayco expressly advises not to spray the glaze.
- Firing range: stoneware; according to Mayco, the glaze works best in the stoneware range
- Oxidation: cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) for blue tones with brown breaks
- Reduction: cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) for a darker colour
- Keep the foot of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf
