Mayco Designer Liner SG407 yellow – fine lines and lettering on ceramics

The Mayco Designer Liner SG-407 in yellow (37 ml) is a clay-based, highly pigmented ceramic colour with a metal writing tip. You can draw fine or bold lines, lettering and small illustrations directly on ceramics, with no extra brush needed. You guide the tip like a pen, and the colour is ready to use.

You can apply the liner to greenware, bisque or other glazes. If you do not put a glaze over it, it fires matt. If you prefer soft transitions, you can also work the colour with a brush for watercolour or ink wash effects.

Application and firing

Apply the lines evenly and not too thickly. The liner is not dimensional, so the line stays flat. If applied too thickly, the colour may crack and possibly flake off. It works best under a clear or semi-transparent glaze that does not run, so that the drawing stays sharp. The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Cone 6 is a mid-fire temperature, cone 06 a low-fire one.

Tips for clean lines

The colour can dry in the writing tip and block it. Close the liner again straight after use and keep the tip clear; a fine needle will help if it becomes blocked. Practise new patterns and lettering first on a test tile or a clay shard so that you can judge the flow of the colour and your pace. As yellow looks less bright on a dark clay body, a test piece on your own clay is worthwhile.
