Mayco Designer Liner SG-409 Bright Green – fine lines and lettering on ceramics
The Mayco Designer Liner SG-409 in Bright Green is a clay-based, highly pigmented liner in a 37 ml bottle. With the metal writing tip, you can draw fine or bolder lines, lettering, patterns and small illustrations directly on ceramics, without an extra brush.
The liner is non-dimensional, so it does not build up as a raised relief. Without a glaze over it, it fires matt. If you want a glossy finish, put a transparent or semi-transparent glaze over it. Mayco recommends a non-running glaze for this so that the lines stay sharp.
Working with the Designer Liner
You can apply the liner to greenware, bisque or surfaces that are already glazed. Guide the tip over the piece in a steady stroke and squeeze the bottle gently as you go. Do not apply the liner too thickly: according to Mayco, it may otherwise crack and possibly flake off. With a brush you can also create watercolour or ink wash effects. Close the bottle after use, as the tip can become blocked if the liner dries on it.
Firing and glaze
The liner is fired in the range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Without a glaze, the surface stays matt. Under a transparent or semi-transparent glaze, the decoration is protected and becomes glossy too. Test the combination first on a test tile made from your own clay and glaze.
Choosing from the series
The Designer Liner comes in 10 colours, from SG-401 to SG-410. SG-409 is the bright green of the range. Several colours can be combined on one piece, for example for leaves, borders or lettering.
