Mayco Designer Liner SG-402 White – fine lines and lettering on ceramics

The Mayco Designer Liner SG-402 in White is a clay-based, highly pigmented underglaze in a 37 ml (1.25 oz) bottle with a metal writing tip. You can draw fine lines, lettering, dots and small illustrations on ceramics straight from the bottle, with no extra brush needed. The metal tip gives fine lines as well as bolder ones. With a brush, you can also let the colour flow as a watercolour or ink wash.

The liner suits greenware, bisque-fired ware (bisque) and surfaces that are already glazed. Without glaze over it, it fires matt. It looks best under a non-running, transparent or semi-transparent glaze. According to ACMI, the liner carries no hazard labelling.

Working with the Designer Liner

Shake the bottle well before use and hold it at a slight angle when writing. Squeeze evenly so the line does not break up or form drops. Make a test stroke on a shard first, so you can see the line width and the pressure needed. White is especially bold on dark clay or over coloured glazes, while on a light clay body the contrast is softer. Close the bottle straight after use so the tip does not dry out and clog.

Firing and glaze

The liner is not dimensional: it does not form a raised texture. If you apply it too thickly, it may crack and possibly flake off, so it is better to apply the lines in a thin layer. At cone 06 Mayco shows the colour effect, and at cone 6 with no colour change. If you want the white to be glossy and protected, apply a non-running transparent or semi-transparent glaze over it. A running glaze can distort fine lines.
