Botz stoneware glaze 9872 Orange – opaque, glossy glaze for stoneware

Botz 9872 Orange is a liquid, opaque and glossy orange stoneware glaze. You brush it onto bisque-fired ceramics and fire it within the firing range of 1,220 to 1,280 °C. The tub contains 800 ml, enough for larger pieces or several smaller projects.

At these high temperatures the glaze becomes vitrified together with the clay, no longer absorbs water and is frostproof. That matters if you want to use vessels, plant pots or decorative items outdoors too. The clay must be suitable for firing temperatures up to 1,280 °C; a low-fire clay will not withstand this.

Application

Stir the glaze thoroughly before use to bring the settled particles back into suspension. Then brush on 2 to 3 coats; Botz recommends 3 rather than 2. Let each coat dry well before applying the next.

Colour and gloss in the firing

Orange gives good coverage when applied generously enough. If you apply the glaze very thinly, the clay body shows through and the colour looks more transparent and paler. If you want a strong, even orange, it is better to apply one more coat. At 1,220 °C the surface tends towards a satin sheen, at the recommended 1,250 °C it is glossy. A test piece on your own clay shows you beforehand how colour and gloss turn out in your kiln. Wipe the foot ring clean before firing so that nothing sticks to the kiln shelf.
