Botz stoneware glaze 9876 White gloss – opaque, glassy, for 1220–1280 °C

Botz stoneware glaze 9876 is a liquid, white, glossy glaze for stoneware. It covers well, is applied with a brush and is fired in the firing range of 1220 to 1280 °C. At this high temperature the glaze becomes frost-proof and watertight according to Botz, so it does not absorb water.

White gloss works as a clear, single-colour base. Mixed with the opaque Botz stoneware colours, it gives pastel shades. If you apply the glaze only very thinly, the surface underneath shows through as transparent. The colour of your clay then visibly affects the result.

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well before use, as the solids settle. Apply it with a brush in two to three coats, preferably three, and let each coat dry thoroughly. Three coats give even opacity. With fewer coats the glaze stays semi-transparent, if that is what you want. Leave the foot of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf.

Firing and pastel shades

Fire at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold, the value recommended by Botz. The full firing range runs from 1220 to 1280 °C. For pastel shades, mix the white glaze with the opaque stoneware colours from Botz. Make a test piece on your own clay first, so you can see how your mixing ratio looks after firing.
