Botz PRO 9306 Saphirblau – deep blue liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9306 Saphirblau is a ready-to-use brush-on liquid glaze in deep blue, glossy and semi-transparent. With a firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C, you can use it on earthenware, stoneware and porcelain without changing glaze.
The tub contains 200 ml. According to Botz, the glaze is suitable for raku and combines well with Botz Unidekor.
Firing temperature and effect
The colour effect depends on the temperature. This helps you plan, as you can use the same glaze for different clays and firing programmes. For the PRO glazes, Botz gives these guide values:
- From 1020 °C (earthenware): strong and almost opaque, apply 2–3 coats
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): the colour is retained, the surface becomes more semi-transparent, apply 2 coats
- Around 1250 °C (stoneware): glassy, semi-transparent surface; good results on porcelain at 1250 °C too
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before brushing and apply it to bisque-fired clay. Leave it to dry for a day before firing. Botz gives a firing temperature of 1050 °C for earthenware and 1250 °C for stoneware, each with a hold time of 10–20 minutes. The firing room should be well ventilated, with the fumes vented directly outdoors. The glaze tends to run when applied thickly: apply it thinly and evenly, leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash.
Tableware: what to bear in mind
According to Botz, all Botz products are non-hazardous (no labelling required). For tableware, the manufacturer recommends the PRO glazes from approx. 1200 °C. In the earthenware range (1020–1100 °C), many clays are not yet watertight: do not use such ceramics for liquids for long periods and do not leave them outside in frost. Botz recommends hand washing.
