Mayco UG-001 King's Blue – deep blue underglaze for ceramics
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-001 King's Blue is an underglaze in a strong, deep blue that you use to decorate ceramics: for patterns, lines and opaque areas of colour. You apply it to wet clay, or to bisque-fired ware that was fired at cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Mayco recommends 2–3 coats for patterns or full coverage.
Unglazed, the colour fires to a soft matt; under a clear glaze the surface turns glossy. For dinnerware: King's Blue is dinnerware safe only under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze it is not intended for this use. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: non-hazardous (no labelling required).
Working with King's Blue
Stir the colour well before use and apply it with a brush, painted, dabbed or layered. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Use a narrow brush for fine lines and details and a broad one for larger areas. For the two usual procedures, Mayco gives these steps:
- On greenware or wet clay: paint, fire at cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), glaze with a clear glaze and fire at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, the colour becomes lighter with this procedure.
- On bisque: paint, leave to dry, apply clear glaze and fire at cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
Firing and glaze
The firing range of the series runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The clear glaze firing is at cone 06–05 for earthenware and at higher temperatures up to cone 10 for stoneware. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 10, some colours in the series change shade. A test piece will show you how King's Blue looks at high temperatures on your clay. For dinnerware, apply a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze over the colour; a clear glaze can also be used to intensify the colour.
