Mayco Stoneware SW-214 Micro Pearl – white stoneware glaze with micro crystals
Mayco Stoneware SW-214 Micro Pearl is a glossy, semi-opaque white stoneware glaze with lilac undertones that breaks over textures. During firing, iridescent micro crystals develop in lilac and pale yellow tones. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe.
The result depends strongly on the firing. At cone 5 you get, according to Mayco, a stable, semi-opaque, frosty white with a pearly, satin finish. To encourage crystal formation, Mayco recommends an oxidation firing at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) for its micro glazes. At cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in reduction, the glaze darkens to a shifting palette of blue, purple and white. The glaze can be used in both oxidation and reduction firings.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a brush, not by spraying. Coat thickness matters with this glaze:
- According to Mayco, up to 3 coats are stable.
- Additional coats or a thicker application can cause the glaze to move.
- Let the piece dry thoroughly between coats.
- Leave the foot unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash or a waster slab.
Which firing should you choose?
If you want a calm, pearly white, fire at cone 5. For visible crystals, follow Mayco's recommendation: cone 6 in oxidation. You get the liveliest colour effect, with blue, purple and white tones, in reduction at cone 10. Because the choice of clay, application thickness, firing process and temperature all noticeably affect the result, it is worth making a test piece from your clay in your kiln. The glaze follows and accentuates the textures of your ceramics, such as incised lines or impressed patterns.
