Mayco Jungle Gems CG1008 Blue Guppy – turquoise crystal glaze for decorative ceramics

Mayco Jungle Gems Crystal Glaze CG1008 Blue Guppy is a brush-on glaze for ceramics with a crystal effect: a semi-transparent turquoise base glaze with black metallic crystals and metallic crystals in varying shades of olive. During firing the crystals spread out and create a pattern that is different on every piece. The glaze is ready to use and comes in a 118 ml container.

You can use it on decorative ceramics such as vases or bowls. It is not suitable for dinnerware: the surface may crackle, so it is not intended for contact with food.

Applying Blue Guppy

The crystals settle in the container, so stirring is part of every application. Apply the glaze to bisque-fired ceramics.

• Shake and stir well before each use so that the crystals are evenly distributed.
• Apply 2–3 even coats with a fan brush, letting each coat dry in between.
• On the third coat, redistribute the crystals if needed so that the surface is covered evenly.
• Do not place crystals near the base: they have flow properties and may run.
• Allow to dry thoroughly before firing.

Firing and choosing within the series

Fire Blue Guppy at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At higher temperatures the colours become paler, so stay within the stated range if you want strong colour. Jungle Gems is a series of crystal glazes with other colours such as Purple Reign and Black Opal. Blue Guppy stands out for its semi-transparent turquoise base glaze with black and olive crystals.
