Botz 9454 Petrol Liquid Glaze – glossy, semi-transparent blue-green
Botz 9454 Petrol liquid glaze is a glossy, semi-transparent glaze in a dark blue-green for bisque-fired ceramics. It is stable in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C and suitable for raku. You apply it with a brush.
Because the glaze is semi-transparent, the clay body shows through and influences the colour: on black and red clay, Petrol looks darker. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how the colour turns out.
Application and firing
The ceramics must first be bisque-fired, at 950 °C at least. Stir the glaze well, as pigments and glaze components settle at the bottom. If needed, you can thin it with a little water. Then apply it with a brush, leave it to dry thoroughly and repeat the application if the colour is not yet strong enough.
- Bisque firing: at least 950 °C
- Stir the glaze, thin with water if needed
- Apply with a brush, leave to dry thoroughly, repeat if necessary
- Firing range: 1020–1060 °C, the glaze stays stable within this range
Preventing runs
Petrol tends to run. Apply the glaze fairly thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot free, so that nothing drips onto the kiln shelf. Kiln wash on the shelf gives additional protection. Several thin coats are better than one thick application, which runs especially easily during firing.
Choosing from the range
If you want a dark, deep blue-green, Petrol works well on black or red clay, as the glaze becomes even darker there. On a light clay body the colour stays more transparent. The range includes other blues, such as Himmelblau, Atlantik, Marinablau and Royalblau.
