Botz 9353 Orientblau liquid glaze – glossy, semi-transparent turquoise with crackle
Orientblau (9353) is a glossy Botz liquid glaze for earthenware in a strong, semi-transparent turquoise. You apply it with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics. During firing the glaze forms fine cracks (crackle). If it is fired up to 1100 °C, the turquoise looks greener.
As the glaze is semi-transparent, your clay body also affects the colour: on light clay and on porcelain clay it is particularly vivid. On dark clay it looks more subdued. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the turquoise turns out.
Application
The glaze works on ceramics that have previously been bisque-fired at a minimum of 950 °C.
- Stir the glaze well and thin with a little water if needed
- Apply with a brush to the bisque-fired ceramics
- Leave to dry well, then apply a further coat if needed
- Fire within the firing range of 1020–1060 °C
Firing, cracks and running
The glaze is stable within the firing range of 1020–1060 °C. If you fire it up to 1100 °C, the turquoise becomes greener. It may then tend to run: do not apply it too thickly and leave the foot of the piece free, so that nothing sticks to the kiln shelf. The cracks form because glaze and clay body shrink differently as they cool – here they are intended. If you would like to emphasise them, you can colour the crackle with Indian ink after firing. The glaze is also suitable for raku.
