Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-009 Jaded – green, glossy glaze for bisque-fired ware and wet clay

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-009 Jaded is a green ceramic glaze that you brush on straight from the jar. It can be used on wet clay as well as on bisque-fired earthenware or stoneware, and fires glossy without needing a clear glaze. Colours in this series can sit side by side without running. That helps with lines, patterns and multicoloured designs.

With one coat the result is translucent, with 2–3 coats it is opaque. This lets you control how strong the green looks. The colours in the series can be mixed with one another. Diluted with water, they give transparent and watercolour effects.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use and apply it evenly with a soft brush. Let each coat dry before applying the next so that it does not lift. Mayco has formulated the glaze for cone 06/05, which is approx. 998 °C and approx. 1031 °C respectively (guide values per Orton chart). It can be fired from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidising or reducing atmosphere.

High firing: test first

At higher temperatures such as cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colour may change compared with a firing at cone 06. This varies from colour to colour. For a high firing, therefore, fire Jaded first on a test piece made from your own clay.

Dinnerware

According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that no hazard labelling is required. For plates, bowls and mugs, follow Mayco's firing instructions and fire the glaze fully within the intended range.
