Botz Stoneware Engobe 9805 Blau – opaque deep blue for stoneware

Botz stoneware engobe 9805 Blau is an opaque deep blue engobe for adding colour to stoneware. It is stable in the firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C and can be mixed with other colours from the Botz Edition.

Fired without glaze, the engobe has a soft matt, earthy look. It covers well and gives crisp outlines, which suits patterns, solid areas and clean edges. Under a clear glaze (e.g. Botz 9300 or 9870), the blue becomes intense, bright and glossy. The 800 ml pot is enough for larger pieces and several projects.

Application

Stir the engobe well before use so that the pigment is evenly distributed. Apply it to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly. For an even, opaque blue you need 2–3 coats. Fire in the range of 1180 to 1280 °C. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the blue looks at your firing temperature.

Matt or glossy – with or without glaze

Applied on its own, the surface stays matt. The blue then looks calmer and earthier, and outlines stay sharp. If you cover the engobe with a clear glaze, the blue becomes brighter and glossy. Because the Edition colours can be mixed with each other, you can create your own shades of blue. Note down the mixing ratio so that you can match the shade again later. The series includes other colours, for example 9801 Weiß, 9803 Miami and 9804 Swimmingpool.
