Botz liquid glaze 9225 Mittelblau is a glossy, semi-transparent blue glaze for earthenware. It is stable within a firing range of 1020–1060 °C and can be fired up to 1100 °C. The glaze is also suitable for raku.

Because it is semi-transparent, your clay affects how the blue looks: on red and black clay it comes out darker. If you want to judge the colour beforehand, fire a test tile in your own clay.

Applying the glaze

The glaze is applied to bisque-fired ceramics. The bisque firing should have reached at least 950 °C.

• Stir the glaze well and thin with a little water if needed
• Apply to the bisque-fired ceramics with a brush
• Leave to dry thoroughly
• If needed, apply another coat, leave to dry again and fire

Running and crackle

The glaze tends to run. Apply it more thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot unglazed so that nothing runs onto the kiln shelf. Also protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. The glaze also crackles, forming fine cracks in the surface. So expect the result not to be completely smooth and crack-free. If you stay within the firing range of 1020–1060 °C, the glaze is stable. The upper limit of 1100 °C is intended for firings where you keep an eye on the glaze's tendency to run.
