Botz liquid glaze 9344 Olivgrün – glossy, semi-transparent dark green
Botz liquid glaze 9344 Olivgrün is a classic tile glaze for earthenware. It gives a rich, semi-transparent dark green with a glossy surface. You apply it with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics and fire it in the range of 1020–1060 °C. The glaze is also suitable for raku.
Because the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay shows through: on a pale clay body the green looks clearer, on dark clay it looks deeper. On black clay the glaze no longer shows any colour effect. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how Olivgrün looks on it.
How to apply the glaze
The glaze is suitable for bisque-fired ceramics that have been fired to at least 950 °C. Bisque firing ensures that the clay body absorbs the glaze evenly.
- Stir the glaze well
- If necessary, thin with a little water
- Apply to the bisque-fired ceramics with a brush
- Leave to dry thoroughly
- If necessary, apply a further coat
- Fire in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C
Preventing runs
Olivgrün tends to run when applied thickly. It is therefore better to apply the glaze in several thin coats rather than one thick one. Work particularly thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot free. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash in case some glaze does run.
Which glaze suits your project?
Olivgrün belongs to the Botz liquid glaze series, which includes further greens such as Flaschengrün and Frühlingsgrün. If you are looking for a rich, dark green with a glossy surface that shows to good effect on pale clay, 9344 is a good choice. On black clay, you are better off choosing an opaque glaze.
