Botz 9538 Glanzocker Liquid Glaze – Satin Aventurine with Crackle
Botz Glanzocker (9538) is a liquid glaze for earthenware: a yellow-shaded aventurine with amber speckles. The surface fires to a satin finish, and the glaze is semi-transparent and forms crackle, i.e. fine cracks, during firing.
The glaze is stable within a firing range of 1020 to 1060 °C. It therefore suits earthenware and clay bodies fired at approx. 1020–1100 °C. Thanks to the speckles, the surface looks lively and flecked, for example on bowls, plates, jars or figures where a warm brown to ochre look is wanted.
Applying the glaze
The glaze is applied to bisque-fired ceramics. The bisque firing should be at least 950 °C so that the clay body takes up the glaze evenly.
- Stir the glaze well, as the speckles settle
- Thin with a little water if needed
- Apply with a brush and leave to dry thoroughly
- If necessary, repeat the application once dry
- Fire within the firing range of 1020–1060 °C
Crackle and colour effect
The glaze tends to crackle. The cracks appear because glaze and clay body shrink at different rates as they cool, and here they are part of the effect. As the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay affects the result: on a light clay body the ochre looks clearer, on dark clay it looks deeper. A test tile made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the colour, speckles and crackle pattern turn out. Among the Botz liquid glazes you will find further colours and effects if you would like to combine Glanzocker with other glazes on one piece.
