Botz 9353 Orientblau liquid glaze – glossy turquoise with crackle

Orientblau (9353) is a glossy, semi-transparent liquid glaze from Botz in a strong turquoise for earthenware. It forms fine cracks (crackle) as it cools and is suitable for raku. The turquoise looks especially vivid on light clay and on porcelain clay.

The glaze is semi-transparent, so the colour of your clay affects the result. On a dark clay body it looks more opaque. The colour also changes with temperature: at 1100 °C the turquoise becomes greener.

Application

Apply the glaze to bisque-fired ceramics that have been fired at 950 °C or above. Stir it well before use and thin it with a little water if needed. Apply it with a brush and leave the coat to dry thoroughly. If necessary, repeat the application. Evenly applied coats give an even colour.

Firing and crackle

The glaze is stable within the firing range of 1020–1060 °C. You can also fire it up to 1100 °C, but the turquoise then becomes greener. According to Botz, the glaze tends to run. Do not apply it too thickly, leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. The crackle appears because glaze and clay body shrink by different amounts as they cool. The cracks are intended here and can be coloured with ink so that the crackle pattern stands out more clearly.
