Botz 9594 Morgenrot Liquid Glaze – White Glaze with Red Flecks
Botz liquid glaze 9594 Morgenrot is a glossy white glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. During firing, large red flecks form and give each piece a lively, speckled surface. The glaze is opaque and, according to Botz, also gives good results on coloured clays.
Morgenrot is one of the Botz liquid glazes for earthenware and is stable in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C. You apply it as a liquid with a brush; spraying or dipping is not necessary. This makes it easy to handle on bowls, mugs, tins, figures and decorative objects made of earthenware.
Applying Morgenrot
The glaze must be well mixed, as the red particles settle. Then proceed as follows:
- Stir the glaze thoroughly and, if needed, thin with a little water.
- Apply with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing at least 950 °C).
- Leave to dry well and, if needed, apply a further coat.
- Fire in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C.
Placing the flecks
The red flecks are large and can travel towards the base during firing. For this reason, avoid placing them in the lower area of vessels and objects. Otherwise the glaze may run onto the kiln shelf; leaving the foot unglazed prevents this.
Morgenrot looks especially attractive when applied in patches and irregularly over a plain, glossy glaze, for example over Botz 9486 Kürbisorange. The red flecks then look like accents on a coloured ground. A tension swatch is not needed here, but a test piece will show you beforehand how the combination looks on your clay.
