MDF Boards 250 × 500 mm – Medium-Density Fibreboard for Crafts and Model Making
These MDF boards measure 250 × 500 mm and are medium-density fibreboard for craft projects, school woodwork and model making. They are made from finely shredded, bark-free softwood pressed under high pressure. The result is a smooth, even surface without grain. The boards are uncoated, so you can saw, rout, drill, sand, glue and paint them straight away.
The boards come in 8 thicknesses from 1.0 to 6.0 mm. Choose the thickness from the options. MDF is an affordable alternative to birch plywood when you need an even surface and the wood grain does not matter.
Which thickness to choose
The thin boards suit fine components, cladding and detail work in model making. With the medium and thick boards you can build sturdy base boards, signs or workpieces for lessons. If you need several parts for one project, plan the thicknesses beforehand, as the boards are only available as whole sheets measuring 250 × 500 mm.
Working with MDF
Thin boards can be cut through with a sharp craft knife and a metal ruler in several passes; thicker ones are cut with a fine-toothed saw or a scroll saw. Lightly sand the cut edges. The edges absorb paint and moisture more readily than the surface, so prime them before painting. Sawing, routing and sanding produce fine wood dust: wear a dust mask and make sure there is good ventilation or extraction.
