JAXELL soft pastels – soft carré sticks for drawing and blending
JAXELL soft pastel by Honsell is an artist-quality soft pastel that you buy as a single stick, so you can top up individual colours. According to the manufacturer, it has excellent pigmentation and a rich, brilliant application of colour. Choose your colour from the options; the range comprises 78 lightfast colours in total.
The stick is less hard than most carré pastels. It releases colour easily and blends finely. Thanks to the square carré shape (10 × 10 mm), you can work over large areas with the broad side or draw precisely with the edge and tip.
Working with soft pastels
For areas of colour, lay the stick flat and pull it across the paper in broad strokes. For lines and details, turn it onto its edge or tip. Because the stick is soft, you can blend transitions with your finger, a blending stump or a cloth. As it is water-soluble, the colour can also be loosened with a damp brush and allowed to run in transparent washes.
Combining and choosing
According to the manufacturer, you can combine the pastels with watercolour paints, sanguine, charcoal and acrylic paint. As a single stick, it is useful for replacing individual shades or extending an existing set. Pastel dust adheres better to textured paper than to smooth paper. If you want to protect finished work, you can seal it with fixative; some shades may darken slightly as a result.
